Police Personnel Killed in Firing Incident at Lal Chowk Anantnag

Anantnag, July 22: A police personnel was killed after unidentified assailants opened fire at Lal Chowk in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday evening.

According to official sources, around five rounds were fired during the incident, resulting in serious injuries to police personnel Aashiq Hussain Qureshi (Belt No. 20), of IR 3rd Battalion, a resident of Beeru, Budgam, aged around 35 years.

The injured policeman was immediately shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Janglat Mandi, Anantnag, where doctors declared him dead.

Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers are suspected to be militants travelling in a vehicle. However, officials said this information has not yet been officially confirmed, and investigations are underway to ascertain the identity of the attackers and the motive behind the incident.

Security forces have cordoned off the area, and a search operation has been launched to trace those involved. Senior police and security officials have reached the spot to supervise the investigation.

Further medico-legal formalities are being carried out, while police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
