Ladakh Municipal Elections on November 21; Poll Schedule Announced for Leh and Kargil
LEH, October 23 (ANN News): The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Ladakh has proposed the schedule for the upcoming general elections to the Municipal Committees of Leh and Kargil, with polling scheduled for November 21, 2026.
According to the election schedule issued by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, the election notification will be issued on October 29. The electoral process will cover 21 wards of the Municipal Committee, Leh, and 17 wards of the Municipal Committee, Kargil.
The previous general elections to the two municipal committees were held in September 2018. With the completion of the electoral roll revision process, the authorities have initiated preparations for the next municipal elections.
Election schedule for Leh and Kargil
The final electoral rolls for both municipal committees were published on October 22, 2026, with October 1, 2026, designated as the qualifying date.
The proposed schedule outlines the key dates for nominations, scrutiny, withdrawal of candidatures, allotment of election symbols and polling.

38 municipal wards to go to polls
The elections will cover a total of 38 wards across the two municipal committees.
The Municipal Committee, Leh, comprises 21 wards, while the Municipal Committee, Kargil, comprises 17 wards. The elections will determine the representatives responsible for municipal governance and civic administration in the two important urban centres of Ladakh.
The final publication of electoral rolls marks a key step in preparations for the elections, allowing the authorities to proceed with the nomination and polling stages in accordance with the applicable electoral rules.
Model Code of Conduct comes into force
The notification states that the Model Code of Conduct will come into force with immediate effect and remain in force until the completion of the election process.
All political parties, contesting candidates and concerned authorities have been directed to comply with the Model Code of Conduct and the instructions issued by the competent authority.
The elections will be conducted under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000, read with the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Committee (Election) Rules, 2003.
Electoral process under CEO Ladakh
Under Section 282 of the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000, read with the relevant election rules, the Chief Electoral Officer is responsible for the superintendence, direction and control of electoral roll preparation, ward determination, reservation and allotment of seats, and the conduct of municipal elections.
The proposed schedule sets the process in motion for the constitution of the Municipal Committees of Leh and Kargil following the previous elections held in 2018.
The proposed polling date is November 21, 2026, with the entire election process scheduled to be completed by November 30.
