SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Jammu and Kashmir Police, in a joint operation with the Army’s 52 Rashtriya Rifles recovered illegal arms and ammunition in Baramulla district and arrested an accused in connection with an unlawful arms possession case.
According to a police statement, a Mobile Vehicle Checking Point (MVCP) was established at Chandsuma, Kanispora near the FCI Godown on June 7, during which a white Maruti Brezza bearing registration number JK02DN-6527, travelling from Srinagar towards Baramulla, was intercepted for checking.
Police said the vehicle was carrying two occupants. During a search, one foreign-made pistol, CANIK TP9SF METE (9×19 mm) manufactured in Turkey, was recovered from a bag carried by the co-passenger.
The accused was identified as Wakeel Ahmad Theekri, son of Noor-ud-Din Theekri, resident of Kamalkot Uri. He failed to produce any valid licence or legal authorisation for possession of the weapon, police said.
The driver of the vehicle claimed that he was merely providing a ride to the co-passenger and had no knowledge of the recovered weapon, the statement added.
Accordingly, FIR No. 70/2026 under Sections 7/25 of the Arms Act was registered at Police Station Baramulla and investigation was initiated to ascertain the source and intended use of the weapon.
During the course of investigation on June 8, police conducted a search operation at Kalsi Hardu, Kamalkot Uri at the instance of the arrested accused.
The search was carried out in the presence of an Executive Magistrate, local Lambardar and Chowkidar, during which police recovered one Chinese-made pistol, two magazines and 13 live rounds of ammunition.
Police said the recovered arms and ammunition were seized as evidence.
The statement said the fresh recovery points towards a larger illegal arms possession network and further investigation is underway to identify other persons involved and trace the source of the weapons and ammunition. — (KIMS)
