Police destroys illegal cultivation, conducts awareness drives in anti-drug campaign in Pulwama
Pulwama, May 2: Demonstrating sustained commitment under the ongoing 100 days Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan, Pulwama Police continued its focused efforts across the district by combining preventive action with widespread awareness initiatives to curb the drug menace.
In a significant preventive action, a patch of land at New Colony Arihal was identified where illegal poppy cultivation was found alongside other crops. The illicit plants were destroyed on the spot, and necessary legal action is being initiated against the landowner. In a similar action at Washbugh, illegal poppy cultivation on private land was detected, leading to the registration of FIR No. 74/2026 under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. During the course of investigation, the crop was sampled and subsequently destroyed on the spot in the presence of officials from the Excise, Agriculture, and Revenue Departments.
Continuing its vigil against drug trafficking, intensive vehicle checking was carried out near Rahmoo bridge to monitor suspicious movement and deter transportation of contraband substances.
On the awareness front, multiple programmes were organised across the district to educate the public, particularly the youth, about the harmful effects of drug abuse. An awareness rally was conducted by Career Care Institute of Education, Newa, with active participation of students and staff, who carried placards and raised anti-drug slogans.
Similar awareness initiatives were held at GMS Kawusibag and by Police Post Sangerwani in various schools, where students were sensitized about the physical, psychological, and legal consequences of substance abuse. The programmes emphasized the importance of early awareness and community participation in building a drug-free society.
Pulwama Police reiterates its resolve to continue such proactive measures and appeals to the public to actively support the mission by sharing any information related to drug-related activities.
