Mehbooba urges govt to avoid coercive action against Jamaat-e-Islami properties

SRINAGAR — PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday urged the government to refrain from taking any coercive or irreversible action against properties attached in connection with Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), saying the matter remains sub judice.

In a post on X, Mufti said that since JeI leadership had publicly stated that it would abide by the judiciary’s decision and challenge the ban through due process of law, the government was “equally bound” to act in accordance with the law.

She stressed that the government must ensure that no coercive or irreversible action is taken against the attached properties while the matter is before the judiciary.

“The rule of law requires equal treatment, procedural fairness, and respect for judicial authority. It cannot be applied selectively or at the discretion of those in power,” she said. — (KIMS)
