Man arrested for posing as police officer, extorting ₹10,000 in Sopore
SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday arrested a man for allegedly impersonating a police official, assaulting a person and extorting ₹10,000 from him in Sopore town of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
According to a police statement, Police Post Bus Stand received a complaint from Nazir Ahmad Lone, son of Ali Mohammad Lone, a resident of Shahgund Naidkhai, Bandipora, alleging that he was assaulted by two unknown persons who posed as police officials and extorted ₹10,000 from him.
Following the complaint, Police Station Sopore registered FIR No. 194/2026 under Sections 308(5), 351, 131, 126, 319(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and launched an investigation.
During the course of investigation, police arrested one of the accused, identified as Junaid Ahmad Gojree, son of Nazir Ahmad Gojree, a resident of Model Town-D, Sopore, for his alleged involvement in the offence.
Police said another accused involved in the case is absconding, and efforts are underway to apprehend him at the earliest.
Sopore Police reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against impersonation, extortion and other criminal activities. It also advised the public to remain vigilant and immediately report anyone attempting to intimidate or demand money while falsely posing as a police official.
