Iran Announces Closure of Strait of Hormuz as Regional Tensions Escalate
Tehran, June 20: Iran’s Central Military Headquarters, Khatam al-Anbiya, has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic, citing alleged violations of ceasefire commitments by the United States and Israel.
According to Iran’s Mehr News Agency, Iranian authorities described the move as the “first step” in response to what they called continued aggression in the region. Officials warned that additional measures could follow if the situation further deteriorates.
Iran has accused both the United States and Israel of failing to honor their commitments, leading to the decision to restrict access to one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes. Any prolonged disruption could have major implications for international energy markets, global trade, and shipping operations.
Analysts warn that the development could further heighten tensions across the Middle East, which is already facing growing instability due to ongoing military confrontations and diplomatic disputes.
The announcement has raised concerns among governments and energy markets worldwide, with observers closely monitoring developments in the Gulf region.
