CCIK Opposes 6.83% Power Tariff Hike in J&K, Demands Immediate Rollback
SRINAGAR: The Chamber of Commerce and Industries Kashmir (CCIK) has strongly opposed the recent hike in electricity tariffs across Jammu and Kashmir, warning that the move will place an unbearable financial burden on ordinary citizens, trade, and industry.
The opposition follows the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh approving an average 6.83% hike in power tariffs, scheduled to take effect from September 1.
Terming the decision unjust, the trade body emphasized that the increase comes at a time when the general public is already reeling under high inflation, rising unemployment, and economic distress across core sectors such as tourism and horticulture.
”At a time when unemployment is at a peak, inflation is biting hard, and ordinary families are struggling to make ends meet, the government has imposed a 6.83% power tariff hike. From election promises of relief and free power to higher bills, what happened to the commitments made to the people?” CCIK stated.
The chamber pointed out that the increase affects both domestic consumers and commercial enterprises, further denting business viability in the region. CCIK reaffirmed its resolve to raise the issue forcefully, stating it will stand with the public and oppose any measure that adds to their hardships.
CCIK appealed to the Omar Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir government to revoke the order immediately. It also urged the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to intervene in the matter to ensure prompt relief for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
