Iltija Mufti questions action against medical interns, seeks stipend hike
SRINAGAR — PDP leader Iltija Mufti on Tuesday questioned the action initiated by the SKIMS Medical College Hospital, Bemina, against medical interns protesting over the demand for an increase in their stipend.
In a post on X, Mufti questioned “on whose behest” the principal had initiated action against the interns, asserting that they were entitled to hold peaceful protests in a democracy.
Her remarks came after the SKIMS Medical College, Bemina, issued a show-cause notice to Community Residents Medical Interns (CRMIs) who have allegedly not been attending their assigned duties for the past week.
The notice stated that the absence of the interns had adversely affected patient care and emergency services at the hospital. It also cited NMC regulations and warned that the conduct could invite disciplinary action, including curtailment, temporary suspension or cancellation of internship.
The principal has asked the concerned interns to explain within 24 hours why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them.
Reacting to the notice, Mufti accused the government of “doublespeak”, saying that the Chief Minister had earlier indicated that the interns’ stipend issue would be resolved on Tuesday, while threatening notices were subsequently issued through principals of medical colleges.
