Police arrest fraudster accused of duping businessmen, shopkeepers in Srinagar

SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday arrested a habitual fraudster in Srinagar in connection with a case involving alleged cheating and impersonation

According to a police statement, the accused, Ubaid Maqbool Khawaja, son of Maqbool Ahmad Khawaja, a resident of Gomal Chek, Tangdar, presently residing at Habib Colony, Aloocha Bagh, was arrested in connection with FIR No. 45/2026 registered at Police Station Maharaj Gunj under Sections 318(4) and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said the accused had allegedly defrauded and duped several businessmen and shopkeepers through fraudulent means and impersonation. Multiple complaints have been received against him from different parts of the Valley, besides several FIRs registered against him at various police stations.

These include FIR No. 76/2022 under Section 430 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Police Station Kothibagh and FIR No. 83/2023 under Sections 201, 379, 416 and 430 IPC at Police Station Pulwama.

The accused had also previously been detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in view of his alleged continued involvement in criminal activities, police said.

Further investigation is underway to establish his wider network and ascertain his involvement in other instances of fraud. — (KIMS)
