Mehbooba slams Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi’s arrest, calls it a ‘Blot on Democracy’
SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday strongly criticized the reported arrest of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, describing it as “yet another blot on India’s democracy.”
In a post on X, Mufti alleged that the government was attempting to silence dissent and suppress criticism.
“The shameful arrest of Rahul Gandhi & Priyanka Gandhi is yet another blot on India’s democracy. A government that fears questions inevitably resorts to silencing its critics,” she wrote.
Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s message to the youth, Mufti said, “Ironically, Rahul Gandhi’s message to Gen Z ‘Daro mat’ has come full circle. Today it’s the government that appears afraid of the Leader of the Opposition.”
She further accused the ruling dispensation of undermining democratic values, stating, “Democracy is being strangulated by brute force. It’s time to stand up to those in power.”
The remarks came amid political reactions over the detention of the Congress leaders, with opposition parties accusing the government of stifling democratic voices. — (KIMS)
