3rd Kashmir Marathon draws over 2,000 runners from 12 countries in Srinagar

SRINAGAR — The successful conclusion of the third edition of the Kashmir Marathon has highlighted Jammu and Kashmir’s growing potential as a destination for international sporting events, tourism and cultural exchange.
Over 2,000 runners, including participants from 12 countries, competed in the full and half marathons, with a total prize purse of ₹3.17 crore.
The scenic route, passing along Dal Lake, majestic Chinar trees, the Zabarwan mountains and historic Lal Chowk, offered participants an opportunity to experience Kashmir’s autumn beauty.
The event also witnessed the participation of more than 1,200 local runners, with a dedicated prize category worth ₹25 lakh for athletes from Jammu and Kashmir. Their participation alongside international competitors is expected to encourage young sporting talent in the region.
The marathon also reflected an inclusive spirit, with children, senior citizens and para-athletes taking part in the event.
The event is expected to support tourism and the local economy by creating opportunities for hoteliers, transporters, artisans and other stakeholders. Alongside initiatives such as the newly established Chrysanthemum Garden, events like the marathon are helping extend the tourist season in Kashmir.
The successful hosting of the international event further underscores Jammu and Kashmir’s capacity to organise major sporting competitions and strengthen its presence on the global sporting map.
The visiting athletes are also expected to carry home lasting memories of Kashmir’s natural beauty, warmth and hospitality, helping promote the region as a tourist destination internationally. — (KIMS)
