Six detained under PSA in Sopore for disrupting student protest, vandalism
SRINAGAR (KIMS) — At least six persons have been booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Sopore town of Baramulla district for allegedly disrupting public order and indulging in vandalism during a recent student protest, police said on Friday.
The accused have been identified as Umar Akbar Hajam, son of Mohammad Akbar, resident of Seelu; Salman Ahmed Shala, son of Mohammad Ramzan Shala, resident of Shalpora Sopore; Altaf Ahmed Sheikh, son of Mohammad Rajab Sheikh, resident of Panzipora Tarzoo; Mubashir Ahmed Gilkar, son of Fayaz Ahmed Gilkar, resident of Naseerabad Sopore; Muzammil Mushtaq Changa, son of Mushtaq Ahmed Changa, resident of Arampora Sopore and Majid Firdous Dar, son of Firdous Ahmed Dar, resident of Chinkipora Sopore.
Police said the individuals were detained under PSA after obtaining detention warrants from the competent authority (District Magistrate) and have been lodged in District Jail Bhadarwah.
According to police, the accused were actively involved in instigating unrest, indulging in vandalism and attempting to disturb peace during the student protest, posing a serious threat to public order and safety.
Police said further investigations are underway and more individuals involved in the incident are being identified for similar legal action, including detention under PSA.
Reiterating its stance, police said there is zero tolerance for unlawful activities and warned that any attempt to exploit sensitive situations or disturb public order will invite strict action under law.
Police also urged the public, especially youth, to stay away from unlawful activities and not fall prey to instigation, while calling upon parents and community leaders to guide youngsters.
Police also appreciated the cooperation of residents in maintaining peace and reiterated their commitment to ensuring security and stability in the district. — (KIMS)
