Science Meets Tradition: SKUAST, Villagers Join Hands to Save Panzath Nag

Anantnag: A team of experts from SKUAST-Kashmir visited Panzath Nag for the second time within a month to investigate the recent fish mortality reported in the area and assess the prevailing conditions on the ground.
During the visit, the team collected water samples from different locations of the spring for scientific analysis to ascertain the possible causes behind the fish mortality. The findings of the study are still awaited and are expected to provide crucial insights into the issue.
A day prior to the visit, local residents carried out their traditional pond-cleaning drive for the second time this year. The initiative aimed at cleaning the historic spring and improving water quality in an effort to minimize fish mortality and protect the aquatic ecosystem.
The SKUAST team also conducted awareness sessions among local residents, emphasizing the importance of keeping the spring clean and preserving it for future generations. Experts highlighted the need for collective efforts to safeguard the ecological significance of Panzath Nag.
Deputy Inspector of Panzath Trout Farm, Ms. Arshi, also interacted with the SKUAST team and briefed them about the functioning of the trout hatchery, which continues to operate smoothly. She informed the visiting experts about the precautionary and preventive measures being undertaken by the Fisheries Department to safeguard the hatchery and protect it from any potential impact arising from the ongoing situation.
The visit reflected a coordinated approach involving scientists, fisheries officials, and the local community, with all stakeholders working together to ensure the conservation and long-term sustainability of the Panzath spring ecosystem.
