Omar Abdullah opposes uniform Friday sermons at J&K mosques, accuses BJP of interference

SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday criticised the proposed move to introduce uniform Friday sermons at mosques across the Union Territory, accusing the BJP of interfering in the religious affairs of Muslims.

In a post on X, Abdullah termed the move “an unacceptable attempt” to interfere in Muslim religious affairs and said it would not be accepted under any circumstances.

“The BJP-appointed Chairperson must immediately halt this misplaced attempt to please her masters,” he wrote.

His remarks came after The Hindu reported that the J&K Waqf Board had pushed for uniform Friday sermons at all mosques in the Union Territory, with the aim of ensuring that topics highlighted at religious places are decided in advance.

The proposed mechanism would make J&K the first region in the country to adopt such a system, according to the report. — (KIMS)
