Mirwaiz under house arrest again, voices concern over Yasin Malik case
SRINAGAR — Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday claimed that he was placed under house arrest again and prevented from visiting the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar, alleging that restrictions on his religious and public activities were continuing.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz said he was scheduled to preside over a function, “Majlis-e-Rahmatal lil Aalameen ﷺ”, at Jama Masjid in connection with the Islamic month of Rabi-ul-Awwal.
He said the programme was to include tributes to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by leading scholars, besides the release of Gulzar Ahmad Parray’s word-for-word Kashmiri translation of the Holy Qur’an and the felicitation of young scholar Mufti Showkat Ahmad Qasmi for memorising the complete Sahih al-Bukhari.
Mirwaiz alleged that repeated restrictions imposed on Fridays were aimed at preventing him from addressing the faithful at Jamia Masjid and discharging his responsibilities as Mirwaiz.
He said the restrictions, though personally painful, would not deter him from fulfilling his responsibilities or raising the people’s concerns regarding their rights.
Meanwhile, Mirwaiz also expressed concern over Mohammad Yasin Malik’s affidavit, reportedly stating his decision not to contest his case further and seek an extreme penalty while maintaining his innocence.
He said the development called for serious reflection on commitments made to Malik and underscored the need for due process, fairness and a humane approach. — (KIMS)
