Mirwaiz terms August 5 a painful reminder, seeks justice and dialogue on J&K

SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday described August 5 as a “painful reminder” of the Centre’s 2019 decision to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, alleging that it was imposed unilaterally and altered the region’s constitutional position.

In a post on X, Mirwaiz said the decision reneged on constitutional commitments made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and further disempowered those awaiting a resolution to the conflict.

He alleged that the changes had affected the identity, character and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, describing them as a “multi-pronged assault” that had left a deep wound on the region’s political landscape.

Despite this, Mirwaiz said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had shown resilience and courage in safeguarding their identity and standing up for their rights.

Expressing hope for the future, he said he looked forward to a time when the Government of India would uphold the spirit of “Insaniyat” (humanity) and “Jamhooriyat” (democracy), and engage with the people of Jammu and Kashmir with justice, sincerity and respect. — (KIMS)
