Mirwaiz backs MBBS, BDS interns’ demand for stipend hike

SRINAGAR — Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Saturday extended support to MBBS and BDS interns across Jammu and Kashmir, calling for urgent consideration of their demand for an increase in stipend.

In a post on X, Mirwaiz said the current stipend of ₹12,300 was “clearly inadequate” for young doctors working long hours and shouldering significant clinical responsibilities.

He said a government-constituted committee had already recommended enhancement of the stipend, and questioned the prolonged delay in implementing the recommendation.

“The administration should engage with the interns, address their genuine demand fairly and expeditiously,” Mirwaiz said, while stressing that patient care should not be disrupted.

He urged the authorities to resolve the issue through dialogue and ensure that the concerns of the interns are addressed at the earliest. — (KIMS)
