J&K govt steps up disaster preparedness, 10,503 school buildings audited
SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir Government has outlined a series of measures to strengthen disaster preparedness and reduce risks across the Union Territory, the Legislative Assembly was informed.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while responding to a question as Minister in-charge of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (DMRRR), said District Disaster Management Plans remain operational across all districts and are supported by functional District Emergency Operations Centres.
To strengthen structural safety, the Public Works (Roads & Buildings) Department has conducted safety audits of 10,503 school buildings, besides periodic assessments of assets under Health and Medical Education, Housing and Urban Development, bridges and other public infrastructure in accordance with applicable BIS seismic safety norms.
The Government has also constituted a specialised High-Level Committee of Experts for Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (HVRA).
The committee will undertake multi-hazard risk assessments and recommend mitigation measures, with the aim of integrating disaster-risk reduction into planning and governance across Jammu and Kashmir. — (KIMS)
