Fakhr-e-Kashmir Remembered: Mirza Afzal Beg’s Enduring Legacy Continues to Inspire Generations

MEHBOOB BEG REMEMBERS FAKHR-E-KASHMIR

Srinagar, June 11, 2026:
The 44th death anniversary of one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most influential political leaders, Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg, fondly remembered as Fakhr-e-Kashmir (Pride of Kashmir), was observed with deep respect and admiration across the Valley. Political leaders, social activists, and members of the public paid rich tributes to the architect of the historic Land Reforms, recalling his immense contribution to the welfare and empowerment of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

To mark the occasion, a well-attended commemorative gathering was organized at the ancestral residence of Fakhr-e-Kashmir in Sarnal, Anantnag, under the leadership of his son and former Member of Parliament, Dr. Mehboob Beg. The event brought together people from different walks of life who gathered to remember the remarkable journey and enduring legacy of a leader who dedicated his life to the cause of the common Kashmiri.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mehboob Beg reflected on the historic role played by his father in shaping modern Kashmir. He emphasized that Mirza Afzal Beg emerged as a prominent voice for Kashmiri aspirations in the years following the events of 1931, championing the rights of ordinary people before significant bodies such as the Milton Commission and the Glancy Commission. According to Dr. Beg, his father’s unwavering commitment to public welfare was evident when he chose to resign from the prestigious ministry in Maharaja Hari Singh’s administration after realizing that the genuine concerns of Kashmiris were not being adequately addressed.

Dr. Beg also highlighted Fakhr-e-Kashmir’s exceptional legal and political acumen, particularly his pivotal role in introducing and implementing the landmark Land Reforms. These reforms transformed the socio-economic landscape of Jammu and Kashmir by dismantling feudal structures and empowering thousands of landless farmers. The initiative remains one of the most celebrated examples of social justice and equitable land distribution in the region’s history.

Recalling the national and international recognition earned by Mirza Afzal Beg, Dr. Mehboob Beg noted that his legal brilliance and statesmanship were admired by distinguished personalities, including renowned Queen’s Counsel Mr. Dinglefoot, veteran journalist Mr. Padgaonkar, and former Vice President of India G.S. Pathak. He also shared an often-quoted remark attributed to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who reportedly referred to Beg as the “evil genius” behind Sheikh Abdullah—a testament to Beg’s sharp intellect, political influence, and unwavering commitment to protecting Kashmiri interests.

The gathering was marked by emotion and reflection as speakers and attendees recounted Mirza Afzal Beg’s foresight, integrity, and tireless efforts in uplifting the marginalized sections of society. Many described him as a leader who placed public service above personal ambition and whose vision continues to resonate decades after his passing.

As Kashmir remembers Fakhr-e-Kashmir on his 44th death anniversary, his legacy stands as a reminder of principled leadership, social justice, and an enduring commitment to the welfare of the people. His contributions remain deeply etched in the political and social history of Jammu and Kashmir, inspiring future generations to work for the betterment of society with dedication and courage.
