Brook slams fastest ODI double century, but England lose to Sri Lanka in record chase

RAWALPINDI — England captain Harry Brook smashed the fastest double century in One-Day International (ODI) cricket history, but his record-breaking knock went in vain as Sri Lanka chased down a mammoth target to beat England by two wickets in the ongoing tri-series in Rawalpindi.
Brook scored 202 off just 116 balls, surpassing the previous record held by India’s Shubman Gill, who reached his double century one ball slower. Brook also became the first England batter to score a double century in men’s ODIs, eclipsing Ben Stokes’ previous national record of 182 against New Zealand in 2023.
England posted a formidable 429 for four, their fourth-highest total in men’s ODIs and the highest ODI total recorded in Pakistan. Brook smashed 21 fours and 10 sixes, scoring 144 runs through boundaries alone.
After openers Tom Banton (50) and Ben Duckett (29) added 74 runs for the first wicket, Brook anchored the innings alongside Joe Root, who scored 69, and Will Jacks, who remained unbeaten on 66. Brook’s innings ended on the final ball when Janith Liyanage dismissed the England skipper.
However, Sri Lanka produced a remarkable run chase, completing the second-highest successful chase in ODI history to win with two wickets and one ball remaining.
Pavan Rathnayake led the charge with 130 off 106 deliveries, while Dasun Shanaka (97), Avishka Fernando (97) and Liyanage (61) made crucial contributions to seal a memorable victory.
The result marked a disappointing outcome for England despite Brook’s historic performance, while Sri Lanka secured a stunning win in the ongoing tri-series.
