ACB arrests agriculture department assistant for taking ₹40,000 bribe in Handwara

HANDWARA — The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Jammu and Kashmir on Monday arrested a senior assistant posted in the Sub-Division Agriculture Office, Handwara, after allegedly catching him red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹40,000 for the release of a tractor subsidy bill.

The accused has been identified as Irshad Ahmad Peer, according to an ACB press note.

The ACB said its Police Station Baramulla received a written complaint alleging that the accused had demanded ₹40,000 from the complainant for clearing a subsidy bill related to a tractor purchased by the complainant’s brother under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP).

Following the complaint, the ACB conducted a discreet verification, which reportedly confirmed the allegations of bribe demand.

Subsequently, a case (FIR No. 06/2026) was registered at ACB Police Station Baramulla on October 12 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018, and an investigation was initiated.

The bureau said a trap team was constituted with independent witnesses and the accused was caught red-handed while allegedly demanding and accepting the bribe. The amount was recovered from his possession, the ACB said.

The accused has been arrested, and further investigation into the case is underway. — (KIMS)
