KERAN (KUPWARA), NOVEMBER 4: In a significant initiative aimed at promoting border tourism and showcasing the rich cultural and historical heritage of North Kashmir, the Keran Heritage Centre at Pharkian in Keran Valley was inaugurated on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

Nestled amid dense pine forests and overlooking the picturesque Kishanganga Valley, the heritage centre is expected to emerge as a major attraction for tourists, offering a unique combination of patriotism, history, culture and natural beauty.

The centre has been developed as a tribute to the courage, sacrifices and dedication of soldiers guarding the nation’s frontiers. Its prominent attraction is a National Flag Site, where the Tricolour stands proudly against the backdrop of the majestic mountains, symbolising national unity, sovereignty and pride.

The heritage complex features a fort-inspired entrance with twin domed towers, along with commemorative walls carrying the inscriptions ‘Sacrifice, Service, Unity’ and ‘Higher Grounds, Stronger Bonds, A Greater India’, reflecting the spirit of national service and the resilience of frontier communities.

A dedicated heritage gallery highlights the history, landscapes and cultural identity of Keran Valley. The centre also features an artillery gun display and landscaped pathways, providing visitors an opportunity to explore the region’s historical significance and heritage.

Another major attraction is Keran Café – Pharkian, a scenic valley-view café with a contemporary glass façade and wooden interiors. The café offers Kashmiri Kahwa, coffee, refreshments and snacks, providing visitors with a comfortable space to relax while enjoying the breathtaking surroundings.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to establish Keran as a prominent destination on the tourism map of North Kashmir. Besides promoting tourism, the centre aims to showcase the region’s cultural identity, encourage community engagement and create new opportunities for responsible tourism.

The inauguration marks another step towards presenting frontier areas not merely as geographical boundaries but as vibrant destinations reflecting India’s cultural diversity, courage, resilience and natural heritage.

With the establishment of the Keran Heritage Centre, the picturesque valley is expected to gain a new identity as a destination where history, patriotism and tourism come together, offering visitors a memorable experience of North Kashmir’s natural beauty and frontier heritage.
