Aga Ruhullah Questions Omar Abdullah Over Shawls Presented to PM, HM; Raises Nishikant Dubey’s Invitation

Srinagar: Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has questioned Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his gesture of presenting shawls to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, arguing that the occasion should instead have been used to submit the people’s resolution seeking restoration of Article 370.

Ruhullah questioned the political significance of presenting gifts to the BJP leadership when, according to him, the more important responsibility was to pursue the demand for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status.

He also raised questions over Omar Abdullah’s invitation to BJP MP Nishikant Dubey to his wedding, referring to Dubey’s repeated remarks against Muslims.

In his criticism, Ruhullah reportedly questioned why a person whose public statements had repeatedly targeted Muslims was invited to a personal occasion, while also being offered a shawl.

The remarks come amid the widening political differences between Ruhullah and the National Conference leadership over the party’s position on Article 370 and its electoral commitments.

Ruhullah has repeatedly maintained that restoration of Article 370 was among the key promises made by the National Conference during the 2024 Assembly elections. He has questioned the government’s approach towards the issue and argued that the demand should not be sidelined in favour of the restoration of statehood.

His latest criticism adds another dimension to the ongoing political confrontation between the Srinagar MP and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, with questions surrounding political gestures, ideological commitments and accountability to the electorate becoming central to the debate.
