Mirwaiz urges Centre to revisit bans on J&K social, political organisations
SRINAGAR — Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday expressed concern over the recent public statement by the chief of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), urging New Delhi to revisit its policy of banning social and political organisations in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz said such restrictions and the “harassment and intimidation” accompanying them were not conducive to peace and stability, and called for greater space for genuine social and political voices.
He also stressed the need for due process in cases where such measures are challenged before courts, saying no action should be taken that could render legal remedies meaningless.
“Attached properties and institutions should be treated with restraint and in accordance with law and judicial process,” he said.
Mirwaiz further argued that a sustainable political process could not be built by excluding genuine voices or replacing them with “convenient alternatives”.
“Those who command real social and political presence must be allowed space and engaged through dialogue,” he said, adding that respect for the rule of law, fairness and meaningful political engagement were essential for achieving lasting peace.
His remarks came amid ongoing legal and administrative action concerning banned organisations and properties attached in Jammu and Kashmir. — (KIMS)
