Vandalism at Sopore girls’ school unfortunate, loss for everyone: Joint Director

Vandalism at Sopore girls’ school a “loss for all”, says Joint Director

Sopore, Apr 15: Authorities in north Kashmir have condemned the vandalism of a government girls’ school in Sopore, describing the incident as “unfortunate” and a setback for the entire community.

Hakeem Tanvir, Joint Director of Education for North Kashmir, made the remarks after visiting the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, where parts of the building were damaged during protests.

He confirmed that a teacher accused of misconduct was suspended on the same day the complaint was received, and an internal inquiry has been initiated. “An FIR has also been registered, and the police will take the investigation forward,” he said in a statement to ANN News.

According to officials, protesters caused significant damage to the school premises, breaking doors and walls and leaving shattered glass across classrooms, which disrupted academic activities for the day.

“It is deeply regrettable. This institution exists for our children and for Sopore. The damage affects not just infrastructure but the learning environment,” Tanvir said, noting that even the school principal was involved in cleanup efforts.

He urged restraint and collective responsibility, emphasising the role of teachers, parents, society, and the media in guiding young people. “Damaging public property is not the solution. It ultimately harms our own children and staff,” he added.

Education officials said classes are expected to resume from Thursday, while further action will be taken if required. Tanvir also noted that while disciplinary measures are necessary, responses should remain measured.

“Where there is a criminal element, the law will take its course,” he said.
