J&K Enforcement Squad Seizes 9 Vehicles, Imposes ₹1.65 Lakh Fine in Major Traffic Drive Across Baramulla and Uri

Srinagar, May 19: The Enforcement Squad of the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory, in a coordinated joint operation with the Traffic Police, conducted extensive technical inspections and vehicle checking drives at multiple strategic locations including Baramulla, Bulgam, and Uri.

 

The drive resulted in significant enforcement action against violators of the Motor Vehicles Act, with authorities seizing nine vehicles, collecting on the spot fines amounting to ₹1,65,000, and recommending suspension of 16 driving licenses.

During the inspection drive, enforcement officials documented multiple violations posing serious risks to road safety:

· Overloading: Goods vehicles found carrying loads beyond permissible weight limits; passenger vehicles transporting commuters exceeding approved seating capacity

· Overspeeding: Multiple vehicles detected violating prescribed speed limits

Er. Mubashir Jan, Head of UT Enforcement Squad & Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Flying Squad, confirmed that the drive was part of a sustained scientific enforcement strategy aimed at reducing road fatalities and ensuring strict compliance with transport regulations.

“Our enforcement drives are intelligence-led and data-driven. Overloading and overspeeding remain the primary causes of fatal accidents across the Union Territory,” Er. Mubashir Jan stated.

 

He further emphasized that the joint operations with Traffic Police would continue unabated. “We have recommended suspension of 16 driving licenses, and the seized vehicles include those posing an immediate threat to public safety. The Motor Vehicles Department is committed to zero tolerance against repeat offenders. Protection of human life is non-negotiable.”

The ARTO Enforcement also urged transporters and commercial vehicle operators to adhere strictly to axle load limits and passenger capacity norms, warning that future drives would include stricter penalties including vehicle detention and legal prosecution. According to official communication from the MVD, the primary objectives of the drive were:

· Strengthening road safety infrastructure and enforcement mechanisms

· Ensuring strict compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act and transport regulations

· Curbing dangerous overloading practices leading to vehicle instability and brake failure

· Promoting responsible driving behavior across the UT

The Motor Vehicles Department, J&K UT, reiterated its commitment towards scientific enforcement, coordinated inter-departmental operations with Traffic Police, and sustained action against violators. Officials indicated that similar surprise checks are planned across other districts of the Union Territory in the coming weeks.

 

Authorities have advised passengers to refrain from boarding overloaded vehicles and to report observed traffic violations to the nearest MVD or Traffic Police unit. Citizens have also been encouraged to document and share evidence of dangerous driving practices through official departmental helplines.
