OTT Free TV Channels May Stop in India as TRAI Reviews New FAST TV Rules

New Delhi: India’s telecom and broadcasting regulator, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, is reviewing whether free live TV channels available on OTT platforms and smart TV apps should be regulated in the same way as cable and DTH services.

The debate focuses on FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) services, which allow users to watch live television channels over the internet without paying subscription fees.

Cable and DTH Operators Raise Concerns

Cable and DTH operators, including Tata Play and Airtel Digital TV, claim that consumers are increasingly disconnecting traditional TV services because similar content is freely available through OTT apps and smart TVs.

According to industry estimates, DTH subscriber numbers have declined significantly over the past few years as internet-based television services continue to grow rapidly across India.

The companies argue that OTT-based TV services should also pay licensing fees and follow broadcasting regulations similar to those imposed on cable and satellite operators.

FAST and ALTD Platforms Under Scrutiny

The regulatory discussion mainly targets FAST and ALTD (Application-based Linear Television Distribution) platforms. These services include internet-delivered television offerings such as Samsung TV Plus and LG Channels, which come pre-installed on many smart TVs.

TRAI has already issued a consultation paper to study how these internet television services should be governed under India’s evolving broadcasting framework.

OTT Companies Oppose New Rules

Digital and OTT companies strongly oppose the proposal. Firms such as Jio Platforms argue that OTT applications are internet services rather than traditional broadcasters.

Industry groups believe applying legacy cable TV laws to internet-based platforms could negatively impact innovation, competition, and digital growth in India.

OTT companies also maintain that FAST channels operate similarly to online streaming services and should not be treated as satellite or cable television networks.

Smart TV Makers Also Involved

Major smart TV manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, have also entered the debate.

These companies say they only provide app platforms on connected TVs and should not be held directly responsible for the content streamed through third-party services.

What It Could Mean for Users

If TRAI ultimately supports the demands of cable and DTH operators, users could see major changes in how free internet TV works in India.

Possible outcomes may include:

Some free live TV channels becoming paid services

Restrictions on free sports streaming

Mandatory licensing requirements for OTT TV apps

Stricter advertising and content compliance rules

However, no final decision has been announced yet. TRAI is currently in the consultation phase, and there is no immediate order to shut down free OTT TV channels in India.
