Baramulla, May 14: In a continued effort to curb the growing menace of substance abuse among youth, the district administration Baramulla on Thursday organised a comprehensive “Nasha Mukt” awareness programme at Doon International School, Singhpora Pattan. The initiative aimed at sensitising students about the serious physical, psychological and social consequences of drug abuse, while encouraging them to actively contribute towards building a drug-free society.
Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Syeed Fakhrudin and SDPO Pattan Raja Majid attended the programme as chief guests. They were joined by school Chairman Manzoor Bhat, Vice Chairman Raaj Bhat, and noted social activist Tauseef Raina, who collectively stressed the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures at the grassroots level.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted that drug abuse remains one of the most pressing challenges facing society today, particularly in Kashmir. He emphasised that educational institutions play a vital role in shaping young minds and instilling values that can help resist such harmful influences. “Students must understand that drugs not only destroy health but also shatter families and futures. Awareness is the first step towards prevention,” he said.
SDPO Raja Majid, in his address, underscored the role of law enforcement agencies in tackling the drug menace, while also pointing out that community cooperation is essential for meaningful results. He urged students to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their surroundings. “You are the eyes and ears of society. Your awareness and courage can make a significant difference,” he added.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and staff, who organised a series of activities including skits, speeches, and interactive sessions to highlight the ill effects of drug addiction. The performances effectively conveyed strong messages about the importance of leading a healthy and disciplined life.
Social activist Tauseef Raina also spoke on the occasion, encouraging students to adopt positive lifestyles and engage in constructive activities such as sports and education. He called upon the youth to become ambassadors of the “Nasha Mukt” movement and spread awareness within their communities.
The event concluded with a collective pledge by students to stay away from drugs and support the administration’s efforts in creating a safer and healthier society.
